Yup, this is probably one of the best designs if I don’t vote for myself.lol. well thought out and well presented. If I had to find a sticking point it may be the aerodynamic shape of a sphere is actually not great but that’s hardly a negative and I think it would need a huge wind load to make a difference. great job.

  8. Paul says:

Brilliant…I am looking for flaws in this design, ( not the presentation but actual flaws where a Zobie or mass of zombies could penetrate and invade) and I not only not see any, I can’t think of any. The Disposal (incineration ) of zombie bodies solves the one thing many do not think of and that is the bodies piling up……simple yet effective dual purpose passive defense…..it kills and cleans….( are you sure you did not invent ShamWOW?? LOL )

    OIL SILO HOME
    =============
    INDEPENDENT ECOSYSTEM

    SELF-SUPPORTING
One Oil Silo Home can comfortably house 1-2 families (4-8 humans). Silo families can maintain their own sustainable home through a 100% self-sufficient living solution. Families operate the numerous mechanisms in the silo with self-generated kinetic energy, thereby achieving strong physical health. By farming delicious protein-rich food, families can infinitely subsist in their Oil Silo Homes.

    PASSIVE DEFENSE
Oil Silo Homes provide a passive defensive strategy, thereby minimizing weaponry requirements and eliminating hostile direct combat. Oil Silo Homes utilize 3 crucial zombie weaknesses: unintelligence, physical weakness, and lack of agility. Ghouls cannot climb or penetrate the spherical geometry of a lofty silo, thereby restricting weapon usage to rare critical scenarios.

    SOLID STRUCTURE
Constructed of fireproof high-impact steel, oil silos are virtually indestructible fortresses. While the bottom half of the oil silo is completely sealed off from zombie threats on the ground, the top half provides a pleasant open-air environment, comprising plentiful windows, photovoltaic solar cells, and greenhouse.

WHAT IS AN OIL SILO HOME?

    52000 OIL SILOS WORLDWIDE

AN OIL SILO, OR LPG VESSEL, IS A STORAGE CONTAINER FOR COMPRESSED LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS. NATURAL GAS IS BECOMING SCARCE AND OIL SILOS ARE NOW BECOMING ABANDONED AS STORAGE CONTAINERS. AS THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE APPROACHES, EMPTY OIL SILOS CAN PROVIDE 100% SELF-SUFFICIENT HOUSING AND TOTAL GHOUL PROTECTION!

    DISASTER-PROOF

    Flood/ Water Proof
An inherently Water-tight container firmly grounded by suspension structure

    Hurricane/ Tornado Ready
Aerodynamic Shell + Reduction of uplift due to uniform pressures and airflow

    Sand/ Blizzard Proof
Geometry prevents accumulation of sand and snow, reducing structural stresses

    Earthquake Tolerance
Structural legs provide flexible suspension as well as rigidity to overall design

    UFO Abduction Proof
Geometry makes alien abduction attempts extremely difficult

    INDEPENDENT ECOSYSTEM

    ENERGY

    01 WIND ENERGY
One windmill fan is installed at the apex of the silo. Three additional fans located in the kitchen, greenhouse, and soil composting area capture energy from rising hot air.

    02 BIKE ENERGY
A pedal power station generates kinetic energy through human exercise. In turn, the exerciser in- creases his/her muscle mass and overall health, thereby maximizing agility and lifespan.

    03 SOLAR ENERGY
Photovoltaic panels are in- stalled between all upper window panels to collect solar energy. Solar energy is also utilized to heat shower and kitchen sink water.

    04 WATER HEATER
This mechanism uses solar heat to increase water temperature. As water runs through a pipeline of glass tubing, it is directly ex- posed to sunlight, thereby increasing its temperature.

    DEFENSE

    05 CORE
The core is utilized to channel energy, water, organic waste, and methane gas through an infrastructure network of pipes and belts. The bottom of the core recycles organic waste into rich compost soil for farming

    06 FLAMETHROWER
In case of critical emergency, a rotating methane flamethrower is useful for eliminating zombie threats. The flamethrower is can also dispose of all zombie bodies and toxic emissions
    in the vicinity.

    07 METHANE GAS
Sustainable energy for the flamethrower is generated by incinerating solid human excrement, converting the toxic waste into pure methane fuel for defensive applications.

    08 ACCESS
A retractable titanium ladder installed along the silo’s horizontal circumference can be utilized by families when the zombie apocalypse comes to an end.

    FOOD + WATER

    09 GREENHOUSE
A vegetable garden containing protein-rich crops (soy, oats, wheat) generates nutritious food for consumption. While purifying oxygen, the greenhouse also provides a recreational chill-out atmosphere.

    10 SILKWORMS
The greenhouse also supports a silkworm farm for silk and protein production. Silkworms morph into butterflies, establishing a whimsical, meditative ambiance. (Optional hemp plantation for fabric and psychological pleasure.)

    11 CO2>O2
The greenhouse plants convert carbon dioxide into pure oxygen, thereby purifying the air inside the Oil Silo Home. Air purification benefits the inhabitants’ physical health and psychological stability.

    12 GREYWATER
2 rainwater collectors provide fresh water for the kitchen and the hand-crank shower. Grey water is recycled for greenhouse irrigation and toilet water.

I applaud the simplicity and the functional aspect of the project. Much of its appeal comes from the fact that the design is both outlandish yet feasible. Can’t wait to see future development!!

  11. I Hate Oil says:

FYI, this type of silo is used in the refinery to hold gas and not oil but this is not important. You will get toxicated by the oil or gas odors.

The problem of “small text” is unfortunately a problem affecting all the competition entries, its due to how the webpage is formatted as opposed to the entries themselves. A more important question that should be asked is:

“Does this design aid in solving the problem at hand?”

Personally, I feel that this entry does one of the better jobs at addressing the problems of a “self-sustaining” home.

Food, living, entertainment, exercise in an enclosed space, water usage, and recycling all seem to be addressed in this proposal. Although I agree that some aspects should have been more detailed, overall, it approaches a tough problem with a rather comprehensive solution.

Photoshop technicalities on whether the water should be more blue or less blue misses the point of this competition, which is more about the idea of survival rather than a display of photo-shopping skills.

    • Jorge says:

I think when it comes to criticism everything is up for grabs, the way you set up your text is part of a design problem, you’re designing your board, whether you choose a light text or a bold text, its a choice of the designer, I know its different between plotting and publishing something in the web. If I recall what I wrote down I didn’t say that the design was bad because you’re text was small, I think I said that even though the text is small in some areas the larger text makes up for it.
In criticism your graphic qualities, they’re also part of the design process, I didn’t say that because you rendered water in plan on an elevation your whole designs is bad, if I did quote me. It is rather a suggestion that you can change in the future, every design good or bad has room for change, I merely stated what can be changed.
I don’t believe saying I like your project is a good source of criticism, I like it, but is that all you want to hear, I wouldn’t, show me the bad so I can corrected.
Maybe you don’t like me and were angry that I wrote something up for you, but well I will leave it to interpretation.

  13. Jorge says:

    READ BEFORE VOTING!!!

Let me start by saying, this is NOT my entry my haters.

The idea of creating a form of sustainable living in these containers is a very interested idea. This would be a project that could be built during chaos of a zombie attack. But I will be fair and will critic it according to your presentation.
First of all, the text on your intro is too small, but you pointed out your 3 main points, self-supporting, passive defense, and solid structure. Due to the small text on your board I can’t read well what self-supporting means, but its not hard to understand with the color coded categories you did along with your leader marks, showing each strategy. I like the global locations of these containers, it is something based on fact, not like other people who made something completely fake to support their design.
The disaster proof is hard to read, but from what can I understand of the symbols, is that is against earthquakes? I’m not sure. Against an angry cloud blowing and spitting? I like the angry cloud, I’m not sure what the fourth one is, it appears to be some giant monsters, and my favorite, against alien attacks, I guess zombies aren’t our only enemies, you watch Battle L.A.
The independent ecosystem diagram is hard to understand, mostly because the symbols are too small, I understand the ones that are shown to the right in larger scale, but the first row of dark symbols can’t be read, so I can’t judge on what direction they lead to.
I like your 3 large symbol categories, the text that defines each symbol is hard to read but its not hard to understand when you go back to the number in the section,
Your Section Cut, I love it, I personally like the hot chicks you put there, and you didn’t discriminate on putting a fat chick too. On a serious note, when you look closely at the floor plates, you can see steel joists running perpendicular, The photoshoping was good, but it could of been a little better. I like the different atmospheres, representing different living spaces. One thing I didn’t like about the section is how you represented your water flow diagram, I think that a light blue color would of have been better, or represented like a water riser diagram showing cold water intake and hot water intake and show how they are distributed, I like your main stack, that was pretty thoughtful, but it needs to go to the sewer.
One thing that does not work well in the design, is your pulley system, it is a large interconnected system, that may end up failing in a short term use. another flaw is how you take your pulleys from the source into your core without disrupting the spiral stairs. I would use a bike for each one of the different functions, that way the tension on the belts would be less overall. Another thing is the fan under the methane gas, if you have a fan blowing down on a closed space, you are just going to blow the gas outside in one use. the best way to prevent the escape of gas it would be sealing the lower section, that’s why these containers are build in a spherical shape, to prevent air flow from entering the capsules.
In another note, I think that you could of substituted the disaster proof diagram with how each one of these containers could of connect with others, because if you have drive close to these thing you would know that where there’s one there’s like 6 of them next to each other, and if you ask me, that would be a real safe town scenario, than a fake one that would take decades to build, and in a bigger note, think about that there are bigger facilities surrounding these industrial containers.
I hope you didn’t get offended by my comments.
And as a final note, again this is not my design so don’t hate on others because of me, you’ll already did it once

  20. Sandra says:

If you want to create a human zoo then this is your design. Sorry but I dont feel that this design was well thought as a place to live on, yeah you thought about the sustainability, but what is the point if you can’t actually live on it. space is so small for each unit. it doesnt seem to hold more than 10 people at the time.

  21. Eric says:

nice! Zombies can’t climb on round things!
